ABSPD CD-ROM's

Beginning Reading for Adults (2005)

This CD-ROM is designed to be used by individuals as well as for group professional development. The application section can be submitted to supervisors as documentation of professional development hours. The content contains numerous strategies and diverse applications of the methodologies that have been gleaned from current research. Included are resources such as a Fry Readability procedure, a sight words list, and a directory of reading realia materials. The easy to navigate format serves as a valuable resource for experienced and new faculty.   

Effective Training (2004)

This manual on CD-ROM presents fundamental strategies proven over time to be effective for planning and presenting professional development for Adult Basic Skills educators. It includes eleven chapters to help trainers make the transition from trainer-centered professional development to participant-centered, activity-based professional development. Effective Writing Instruction (2006)

This CD-ROM is designed to provide professional development for basic skills instructors in teaching effective writing. Content chapters include Focus, Organization, Development, Style, and Conventions. The interactive format of this CD-ROM allows the user to choose their own learning path, while providing resources and online sites for further research. An application section is included to allow the user to begin putting the information into practice.

How to Use the Scientific Calculator (2003)

This CD-ROM focuses on using the scientific calculator. The first section introduces the calculator as a tool. The second section teaches the use of the calculator to perform basic and intermediate functions. The third section teaches the use of the calculator to perform advanced functions. Practice is provided for each key. The CD-ROM is designed to train instructors in using the calculator with Level I Basic Skills through Adult High School math students. Instructors can also adapt the CD-ROM for student use.

Inspire a Life of Reading:   Lesson Plans to Engage Adult Beginning Readers (2005)

This manual on CD-ROM includes activities in the areas of assessment, phonemic awareness, word analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Activities are complete with goals and objectives, directions, handouts, game boards, and material lists. All activities are correlated with reading competencies and are appropriate for individuals, teams, or large groups.   (Also available in hard copy)

Numeracy (2004)

This manual on CD-ROM is designed to serve as a guide for professional development to enhance the teaching of Adult Basic Skills mathematics. It includes research-based information on the need for numeracy instruction as well as chapters on how to "defeat" math anxiety and how to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics. This CD-ROM is designed to provide professional development for Basic Skills instructors.   It incorporates information and activities for working with our youngest students.   This CD-ROM coincides with the other ABSPD instructional materials-Understanding and Teaching Our Youngest Students training manual and video.   The interactive format allows users to select learning paths for knowledge enhancement, learn through practice applications, and adapt strategies for specific students and classes.   Content topics include:   challenges, characteristics, learning styles, classroom, and instruction.  

Welcome to Adult Education (1997)

Welcome to Adult Education is a CD-ROM that has been developed as an orientation to Adult Basic Skills instruction. It is a fantastic training device for new instructors. The CD-ROM is divided into three sections that emphasize teaching the Adult Learner. The three sections are: 1) Qualities of an Effective ABS Instructor, 2) the ABS Student, and 3) Managing the Classroom. The CD-ROM is interactive and includes movies, sound, and motion graphics.
